Death Whispers #1 New Adult Dark Paranormal / Scifi Romance eBook Tamara Rose Blodgett

The first thing that stood out to me about Death Whispers is that it's told from a male point of view! It was very interesting and different to be in the mind of a teenage boy. Even though I myself have never been a teenage boy, I thought the author did a great job capturing the teen boy essence, complete with smelly socks and an insatiable appetite! But Caleb isn't a normal teenage boy, even among those who develop paranormal abilities. He has a rare ability to raise the dead!

I loved the setup of scientists finally unlocking the human genome and discovering latent supernatural/paranormal abilities coded there. These abilities now manifest at puberty due to some kind of shot all kids get, and Caleb has got the rarest of the rare of abilities. One that he must hide, or else the government may take him away to use his abilities for "political" purposes. Of course, Caleb is a bit careless with his power as the book moves along. Using zombies to fight off bullies and help build a hideout is not the smartest of moves. The zombie-gopher army was pretty awesome though!

One thing that I didn't like about this book was that it took place in "our world." Everything related to the paranormal abilities, and AP testing, came about because of President Obama's health care reform. It was only mentioned once, but I would have preferred this to have been set in a fictional government. I did like how some of today's stuff was considered old school (Hinder, phone numbers, books, etc). It's something I often think about, since technology and trends are always evolving. I thought those aspect were added in nicely.

This may be random, but I absolutely loved Caleb's mom! She's a cookie baking environmentalist, and doesn't let Caleb get away with using "gay" and "retard" as derogatory terms. You go, Alicia Hart!

While this book for some reason seemed longer than its 354 pages (there was a lot going on), I really enjoyed it. I loved how the different paranormal abilities were categorized and ranked based on strength. Watching Caleb discover all he can do was fun, exciting, and sometimes a little scary (Great Grandma!!!). There were themes of how much the government should be involved in our lives, and that great power needs to be used responsibly!

Death Whispers #1 New Adult Dark Paranormal / Scifi Romance eBook Tamara Rose Blodgett Reviews

The story is told from the viewpoint of a 14 year old boy. So some of the things he says and does, will make you want to occasionally smack him. But that’s also what makes the story feel real. He acts in the way I’d expect a teenage boy to behave.

The story takes place in 2025, 10 years after a healthcare act Obama has helped create. 10 years after the first of the children who were injected with a drug start to manifest paranormal abilities. Some of them have tested low enough they can pick from the jobs offered, some of whom tested high enough on the paranormal scale that they were all but kidnapped and forced into jobs the government wanted them to have.

I loved some of the technology the book introduced us to. But it was annoying that none of it was really explained. Everything was called either a “pulse” or a “pulse-name-of-object”, with very little explanation of what they were or how they worked. Every child had a “pulse” that seemed to be both personal phones, note takers, a way to tell time, etc. But there were also “pulse computers” and what amounts to a pulse water faucet.

Part of the lack of explanation for things is the fact that the 14 year old boy character didn’t care about such things, just took them for granted. But as a reader, I would have loved to know how this stuff worked even slightly more.

It could have used more proofreading as well, some misspelled words, left out words, and the wrong word used a number of times. I didn’t care for the ending either, but as it’s a first in a series, I’m hoping some of the stuff that we got left hanging with gets explained in book 2.

But I did really like the idea, and how the world had evolved in just 10 years. I liked Caleb and Jade, and would like to read more about them as they move on to high school. Jonesy I didn’t much care for, but am hoping he’ll grow up a bit in the next book and that will make me like him more.

I’ll most likely pick up book 2 at some point to see if I like that one better. But if you don’t mind reading from a teenage boys POV, and can submerge yourself enough in the plot to ignore the lack of technology explanations, I would recommend reading this book.
This series must be read in order. This is the first book. I miss the original version without all the added real life our world stuff like Obama and the RFID chips! The original version was more believable and chilling. Now I wish I had bought a hard copy so I could just read the original ( That said the book is still really good... It was just awesome before...

Caleb is growing up... The first sign of this for him is raising the dead as he passes out... Biology is so not his best subject! Dissection anyone? As he learns by experimenting he gains more control over his powers and he begins to realize that maybe he is in over his head and should start worrying about his future (or lack of it if the government gets wind of his abilities) and FINALLY tells his parents that he is a five point aftd.

This book as an alternate earth timeline is very believable (though not as much as before) . I love this series and have read it many times up to the fourth book and am rereading it again as I just bought the fifth book and wanted to be fully immersed in the world when I read the new installment. I hope the changes do not continue as the beauty of this series was the vague scary government that while sort of like ours WASN'T ours ... But all in all it is an amazing series and I am always amazed at what the possibilities are and how things you never dreamed of happen anyway.

I would suggest this series to all lovers of science fiction and dystopian fiction. It is young adult but takes maturity to fully understand the ramifications of the world they live in and the choices the kids have to make so adult will probably love it even more. I know I did!

***This series is suitable for mature young adult through adult readers
