I finally got the library copies of Matched. Unfortunately theirs is not a Kindle copy. The readable version is one I had to read on my computer, Adobe Digital Edition. I have trouble reading with white background and I couldn't adjust the font either. BUT the library Overdrive MP3 version came to me at the same time. This version might be well worth the money spent for the Audible version.

The narrator, Kate Simses, has a sweet light voice but she is versatile enough to bring forth the other characters. I got the sense of innocence from her voice and the depth of the emotional confusion that Cassia, the main character, must go through as she learns that the perfect society--isn't. She, also, pulled out the confusion of love for two guys. -- But I hated the music brought in to enhance the story. Ugh! Hokey!

That said, I would have bought the Kindle version but it was too expensive. If my eyesight could handle the paperback for the same price I could have shared with friends. And this is a good enough book I would like to share it with others. But Kindle version is un-loan-able. At least it has text-to-speech. I don't know who sets up these things. If it is the publisher, shame on you! This author has put out a GOOD BOOK! I don't mind that it costs so much as it has been well edited and is fun. Her book, though of similar genre to other dystopias, takes a different point of view. It is more poetic and shows abilities that our next generation may actually lose if someone doesn't point it out. If the author set up this selfish mode making Kindle not lendable, I believe you are missing your own points. In this day and age with so many out of work, it would be nice to be able to share. If that person likes your work, and it IS likable work, then, when they finally have the money they will not only buy your 1st book, but maybe buy and gift the trilogy for themselves and others in their lives.

About the book (sorry I had to get the above out of my system!), I started reading (more listening than reading) it yesterday morning, and except for a couple interruptions, I couldn't put it down until I finished it at 3 AM. It wasn't angsty or tension-based. It was more of a quiet education of things that could go wrong in society if we as a people don't pay attention. It makes you remember how the arts are the Spring of life. That our strives for health and efficiency can actually lower what is good about our lives today. That too many choices are just the right amount of choices. And hey, what's wrong with loving more than one person? If you love them and they love you and you can get past the childishness of jealousy, you all are better off for it.

This book is set up so that your young teen, maybe even a pre-teen could read it. It might be a fun read aloud (or listen to the audio version) for a family as there are many points of education presented.

Finally: it is only due to the lending not enabled that I didn't buy the book (and I am still thinking about it, anyway) and that also led to less than a five star rating.

Unfortunately, this title didn't work well for me. The heroine of the story spent far too much time wondering which boy was the right one for her. It was a little low on substance for me. In other YA dystopian novels, there is a conflict to be solved and there may be a light romance in the background of the story. This story is heavy on the romance and light on the conflict. Additionally, all three characters involved in the romantic triangle seem rather bland and none of them seem to have much of a connection with each other. The heroine of the story does not come across as particularly bright, and it's difficult to see why either male character would be drawn to her. I'm afraid that halfway through the book, I was still waiting for something of consequence to happen. The situations that seemed like they could have led to something don't get much of an explanation, and by the time they are explained, you really don't care anymore.
The world was developed nicely however led you to no emotional tie. I guess this was intended since the society is so cold and calculating. I get it had to be created this way but still... it seemed so flat. The pacing was slow. I didn't find myself really intrigued or connected until I was about 70% of the way through.

The character development could have used a lot of work. Cassia seemed very flat and I didn't feel any sort of connection to her at all until almost the end of the story. Again, this may have been intentional because she was so molded and brainwashed by her society, however I would have liked to see more action, more outward fight as opposed to all internal fight or at the least, way more curiosity.

Xander was a solid character and a bit interesting but that's as far as my feelings go on that one. Em is utterly forgettable. There wasn't really a love triangle... it was always just ky.

Ky was really the most interesting character although I didn't think so until the very end which means pacing was too slow. I think 50% through the book cassia and ky had only spoken a handful of words to each other. When she first told him she loved him, my response was why? She barely knows him. I Wonder if she only fell for the idea of rebellion that he encompassed because she was too weak and molded to feel true rebellion in her own gut. Again, too much internal going on.

Nutshell pacing was too slow for my taste. Characters were very flat. The concept was interesting but the world was flat. I get what the author tried to do. Internal story, internal struggle. It just all fell flat for me.

I give it three stars because ally condie did have a poetic turn to her writing though at times it was overdone. It was written nicely. There were a few memorable quotes. I will actually read book 2 because now that the story has moved out of cassias province, maybe the pace will quicken and there will be more external struggle and action. And finally the girl is beginning to THINK of developing a backbone. Just wish it hadn't taken a whole book to get to that point.
